Jashin Average – 14

Chapter 14 – Natural Enemy

An ishibitsu is a Japanese funerary urn made of stone. They’ve been around for at least a millenium.

Picture of an ishibitsu with its lid: http://www.fufufufu.com/fufufufu_image/p_image/3/20338_3.jpg

When the day broke, I put on the robe that I had draped around my body, and headed to the bathroom. For now, since the forced equipping doesn’t happen as long as I’m touching it, when I go to bed, I drape the robe around me in place of a blanket.
After washing my face and getting rid of my drowsiness, I headed to the dining area that was part of the kitchen, and found that Tena was already in there preparing breakfast.

“Ah-, good morning, Anri-sama.”

When I called out to her, she replied back energetically.
When I sat at the dining table, my breakfast was carried over to me in an instant. Toasted bread and fried egg with salad and soup; a healthy breakfast. If I had to be greedy, then I’d have liked a Japanese-style breakfast, but since there’s no rice nor miso, even demanding it wouldn’t help.
Tena set down the same meal on the other side of the table, and then sat down as well. Because she kept firmly refusing, it took quite a bit of effort to get her to eat with me, but now its basically how we spend every breakfast. I’m not a noble, so it’s tough on me to have somebody stand behind me while I eat breakfast by myself.

Nomnom, yummy. It’s a simple meal, but Tena’s cooking is generally delicious. I’ve decided not to ask Tena yet what her life in the village was like, but judging from her personality, she probably earnestly helped her parents.

“Speaking of which,”

“Yes? What is it?”

“Does ‘Sacred Goddess Sophia’ ring any bells?”

“Sacred Goddess-sama? Well, of course, but…”

When I gave that question a try while eating, I found out that apparently, the deity worshipped in the standard religion for this world, the Sacred Light Faith, was the Sacred Goddess in question. She was apparently the deity that created this world, fights against the Evil God as the Goddess of Light, and guides the people through divine protection and divine revelations. Those who receive particularly strong divine protection become heroes, and becomes those that defeat the Demon King, the being born from the Evil God to bring calamity to humanity.

“U-, Um… of course I swear loyalty, to you, Anri-sama! Sacred Goddess-sa-, I mean, the Sacred Goddess means nothing to me!”

“I don’t really mind if you just keep calling her Sacred Goddess-sama.”

Perhaps because she misunderstood my silence while I was thinking, but Tena followed up on her words in a fluster. Although it was the cost of saving her life, I did give something like the divine protection of an evil god to Tena, so I had decided that I needed to tell her that the power came from an evil god, and did so. I left out the part about coming from another world, though.
Only, unfortunately I’m just a human who was given too much power by an evil god, so it’s not like I’m particularly opposed to Sacred Goddess-sama or anything, and as long as it doesn’t harm me, I’d rather her try her best to beat the crap out of that evil god, really.

“Do you know anything about the Hero?”

“Hero-sa-… I mean, the Hero? I’ve heard that the Hero is a special person who’s received divine protection, and fights with the Demon King to defeat him. Also, if I remember correctly, when Obaachan’s Okaasan was a child, there was a great celebration across the nation because the Hero had defeated the Demon King.”

Eh? The Demon King has already been subjugated?
I don’t know about the average lifespan in this world, but I think that Tena’s great-grandmother being a child was fifty years ago at the very least. Going by his age, the Hero that’s invading this dungeon should be a different person. In that case, why was he given divine protection? Could it be that there’s another Demon King?

“Are there lots of Demon Kings?”

“No, at the very least, I have only heard of one. Only, the priest that came to the village to teach us said that even if the Demon King is defeated, he eventually revives.”

I see, the Demon King defeated 50 years ago has revived, and to defeat that, the [current] Hero Arc was chosen to face him?

“Do you know where the Demon King is?”

“I don’t. People say that in the Demon Race Territory, there’s a Demon King Castle, and he’s in there.”

“Demon Race Territory?”

“Ah-, yes. The western part of this continent is controlled by the demon race. The eastern side are divided into a number of human countries, but they say that all of the Demon Race Territory is controlled by the Demon King.”

After that, once I asked in more detail, I found that Riemel apparently belonged to the Kingdom of Fortera, and was right in the middle of the continent. Being in the middle of the continent has a nice ring to it, but if the east and west are divided up between the human race and demon race, then being in the middle makes it the front lines. I wonder if on the way to the Demon King, the Hero party heard about this dungeon and dropped by here.
Or more like, I wish they would avoid detours like this and just go fight the Demon King already. Hurry up and go.

After finishing breakfast, I asked for just some red tea from Tena who had begun washing the dishes, and holding my tea cup, I headed to the office.
When I checked the screen, I found that the Hero Party had already packed up their simple camp, and begun exploring again. The floor they’re on right now is the 7th floor, so if they progress smoothly, I expect that they’ll make it to the 10th floor room that the No Life King is protecting in the evening.
Honestly, as a fighting amateur, I have no idea who’s stronger, but if my boss loses, I’ll have a lot I’ll need to think about.
Since they thought that this dungeon would have less floors, they came in here unprepared and I don’t think they’ll make it to where I am, but next time they’ll probably come to conquer this place, completely prepared. It won’t matter if they can’t win against the No Life King, but if it seems that they can beat him, then the chance that they’ll reach me eventually is high.
I’ll need to come up with various measures before they arrive here the next time. Uneffected by my nervous surveillance of them, they steadily made their way through the dungeon.

The Hero party who had arrived at the 10th floor following my expectations were, contrary to expectations, stuck before the 10th floor boss room. What they were tilting their heads in thought about was the puzzle pedestal that I had installed there for aesthetics’ sake.

『“Thee who wouldst come in challenge before the throne of the undying one, arrange correctly the stars.” huh? Just what the heck could it mean?』

『There are many undead in this dungeon, so I believe that the “Undying One” refers to the boss of this dungeon.』

Widdi replied to the puzzled looking Zio.
Right right, having you think that makes me really happy. And having you go home satisfied after defeating the No Life King would make me even happier.

『I see. Then in other words, if we want to fight the dungeon master, then we have to “arrange correctly the skies”, huh? I wonder what “arrange correctly the skies” means.』

『They probably mean the celestial bodies, huh? I think that’s what these marks on the pedestal represent.』

Ah-, speaking of which, I had the symbols for the sun, moon, and stars, but I didn’t think about whether or not that would translate properly in this world.
Well, they did guess that it referred to the celestial bodies, so maybe there’s no problem.

『How are we supposed to arrange these marks? …They don’t bloody move.』

『Seems that putting mana into it doesn’t work either, huh.』

Eh? No, no, I know that you guys only have one of them, but you’ve still got one of the stone slabs, you know.
Could it be that they forgot? Or could it be that they didn’t see the marks on the slates properly?

『Arc-sama, has the guidance of the Holy Sword not given any clues?』

『Sorry, nothing really…』

『N-, No! I apologise for asking too much!』

So even that cheat-sword that even saw through traps can’t deal with this stupid puzzle, huh? I’m feeling this odd mix of relief and pity…

『Even the Holy Sword from Sacred Goddess-sama can’t do a thing? Seriously? It’s a pretty hard question, hey? As someone whose specialty is using my body, this kind of thing is a bit much for me.』

『Don’t say things like that, and think together with everyone!』

Huh…? Things seriously don’t look good. I put that thing there as a bonus question for aesthetics’ sake, but once they butted heads with it, they got seriously stuck. Collecting the slates from around the 10th floor is annoying, but I thought solving the riddle itself would’ve only taken 2 seconds, but…

Hey, don’t try and slash the pedestal!
It’s not an ishibitsu either, so stop trying to look for a lid to take off!
Cut it out, meatheads!

『It’s not good. I haven’t the tiniest idea how to get the dungeon master to come out. I thought this place would be a shallow dungeon, so we didn’t prepare enough. It’s frustrating, but let’s withdraw for now.』

『T-, To withdraw right before the dungeon master…-!』

Eh-? There’s no way you’ll come all the way here only to go home without fighting the boss, right?
It’ll trouble me too in various ways if I don’t find out if you guys or the No Life King are stronger.
Hey-, wait! Don’t seriously go home!
At least put back the slab you took, you thieves!

  1. Just did one last check for any LN updates before going to bed and saw this :D
    Thanks for the chapter!

      1. he isn’t a hero(lol) because he is smart enough to know when to give up, unlike Kouki who goes “justice(i) will always prevail!”

more importantly, thank you very much for the chapter!

  2. Perhaps give him the benefit of the doubt…? He may have thought you did Jashin Average as a teaser.

As you already know, your blog isn’t the easiest to navigate… For example, I still haven’t figured out how to find status update posts aside from opening it from my RSS feed. If he doesn’t follow your blog, then it’s not too too far-fetched for him to misunderstand where you were going with this TL, given that you do a lot of teasers and have several low-priority projects.

    1. you can go to aho-updates.com to check for status updates.

Also, can’t really give him the benefit of the doubt. Jashin Average islisted under active projects here.

  3. Thank for the release of Anri-sama

btw, I went to that page and felt very fishy about it. Hope I just thought too much and he’s just new to community.

    1. They probably pick up everything they find in the hopes that it might be useful later or can sell it.
You should see what happens to the inventory of my characters in RPG games.

      1. Baskets! Bowls! Wheels of cheese! Bringing players to their knees.
        Undead armored’s arms like axes,
Books you’d burn if not for companions.
House them in some barrels but, you skewed up now they’re gone.

I would go on with my impromptu psuedo poetry, but im to busy imagining fictional fiction stories. Fictional in that I’ll likely never devote myself enough to actually write them.

      2. Well you know junk items are worth half a cap. Which when combined with other junk can pay for 9mm bullets you use to hunt bandits so you can then strip them and get that sweet katana you been pining for…

  4. Did she just called them thieves?
BTW, I don’t think I ever played an RPG where I had to return puzzle pieces before exiting the dungeon. She should just enchant those slabs with some kind of return spell that activates once they leave the dungeon.

  5. When I do stuff I would actually try to do the chapters in reverse order like last chapter to current chapter and some how meet in the middle so that the series gets done faster and not make others’ work invalid by sniping or offer to help them finish something in progress or do a chapter that is several chapters ahead of what some other people have started on. Just common courtesy. Chances are for series like these you were already working on the next chapter. Either work a some kind of system like each person does every other chapter or so like how people are doing with konjiki no wordmaster or you work backwards and meet them in the middle. Readers prefer it all in one place and to be done as efficiently and well as possible. Sniping is not only rude, it also slows the progress since doesn’t take into account that other translators were already working on it.

  6. Thanks for the translation.
Btw, did you miss a segment? I checked the raws and that blogspot link you posted for the other guy doing translations and he has this segment that’s missing from this chapter.

    Quote from the blogspot{
After finishing breakfast, to Tena who has started to wash the dishes, I ask her to make red tea, and head over to the office.

Nervously I watch them continue their exploration; they cleared the floors with no problem.

Also, after comparing the two translations, your sentence wording is better, some of that other guy’s sentences is utterly confusing.

    Example of your version:
“Perhaps because she misunderstood my silence while I was thinking, but Tena followed up on her words in a fluster.”
    Other version:
“After thinking deeply and making a strange misunderstanding, Tena flusteredly insisted she decided to follow the silent me.”
In this case, it’s not clear who is thinking deeply and made a misunderstanding. Also, “decided to follow the silent me”… What exactly is the action being done here lol.

Tl;dr: possible missing segment, sheeprabbit’s translations are better worded

      1. No, thank you.
And about the other guy translating, from his translation and not asking permission first, it seems like he’s just a guy who likes LN and want to contribute though he’s a complete noob about it. Don’t be too harsh on him, that includes you readers too, I’m guessing he means well and all though it’s bad etiquette. His english wording needs improving though.

  7. Thanks for the chapter.

If I was the dungeon master and the hero’s party left like that I would teleport in front of them and say something like:
“Are you guys idiots? Obviously you are meant to place the slab symbols in the holes. You even have 1 already!”.

I’d much rather read your translations.
I’m already familiar with your particular translation quirks for this story and the other guy will probably translate it differently.
Besides, I like your sense of humour.

All hail The Esteemed 5th Holy Sheeprabbit, Estelion Sharlulu Asheel Vinchance Celenalia di ef Falufiluu’Luufilaafee (The 35th) and his/her works!

  8. Thanks for the chapter, will not read anyone else’s posts but yours when it comes to the Translations since I love the quality of the scans. Speed isn’t an issue as long as I know you did it.

  9. Uh no thanks~ I am, normally, pretty conservative about whose works to read, so it’s not like I would read anyone if there’s better alternatives, and not much speed difference. pass on that link~

On another note: This is unexpected. More puzzles, then. A modern person has the advantage of many puzzles in movies, games, novels, world fairy tales, etc… This should be exploited~

  10. It sucks to be the guy that got sniped but you can atleast work together right? Something like the Tate no Yuusha team that also handles KnWM (from some anons to Bakahou to KookiexYorai) which uses baka-tsuki to register chapters and standardized translation and encourage each other to finish their own reg’d chapter (yep, this is all for my own selfishness, Im a bad little lizard)

Thanks for the translation (I kinda like your version better) and I hope you guys can work together if his work is on par with your standards (or has potential), unless that was E***ion trying to mess with us by making a ‘revenge’ translation.

P.S. If he is a dick, I hope he gets DDOS attacks and may Santa eat all his virtual cookies while filling all his socks with coal…every MWF…all year

    1. No. I’m very picky about having one translator only per series, unless it’s absolutely necessary (400+ chapters, or 100+ long chapters).

When you translate, you don’t just literally translate. You interpret the style of each character’s dialogue as best you can, interpret the nuance and humour, and a whole bunch of other things.

The Side Chapter Arc for this series was all completely different perspectives, so it worked well with another translator (Vidar), but otherwise no.

Tate no Yuusha as a whole translated series has one of the lowest quality and lowest consistency translations I’ve ever seen. It’s a necessary compromise because Yorai-kun is only one man, and it’s still somewhat alright since it’s a fantasy harem/action series, but for a comedy like this?

      That’s first person narrated?

      Hell to the no.

    2. And no, unfortunately he’s not up to what I’d find acceptable. It’s probably just inexperience with reading Japanese fiction, but he had no idea what some words meant, and was struggling with particles and getting various sentences entirely confused.

If possible, I’d recommend that he translates an action fantasy/harem novel with simpler sentences. Or better yet, read lots and lots of Japanese novels before that.

But I would not recommend touching a comedy with a ten-foot pole at his current level. Which is not to say he’s bad by any stretch of the word. Only, he needs to get used to how Japanese write stories and construct sentences first. And learn what a lot of the words mean.

And I’m sure there’s some Japanese fluent guy out there looking at my translations and thinking the same thing about me.

    3. Read the comments, sheeprabbit already said

I don’t believe in multiple translators unless absolutely necessary. i.e. 400+ chapters.

Each translator has their own way of interpreting things and localising ideas, styles and phrases.

      This story is 52 chapters.

Which is fair enough, it’s not like Mushoku tensei where it will take forever for 1 guy to finish translating all of it. Well, In this case, I’m with sheeprabbit since he does translations frequently. But there are some people who do 2-4 chapters over the course of several months. In that case, I support the idea of having multiple translators.

      1. To be honest I think it’s more important to get the right tl style on the right genre and writing.

Something where the focus is on cute chicks and the action and whatnot is not going to suffer too badly from multiple translators. They tend to be insufferably long as well, so all the more reason to have a team working on it.
e.g. GunOta which I’ve begun helping out on as well.

For something like Kenkyo or Otoburi, no matter how slow he is, or how slow he is, or how much of a slow Korean translator he is, or how slow he is, there must only be one translator per version.

If somebody else wants to do Kenkyo faster, start at chapter 1 please.

  12. and rabbit sama i first thought that sniping you is about some dragon cult that is on hare hunt for a tribute but it seems about that thing huh. well im on your side rabbit sama.

  13. Soo. . that fufufufu site reference is diferent than the fufufu site that I know. Well, I almost have some dirty hype about that site running again. Good thing that’s different site and the former didn’t up either (kinda bad for me though)

      1. Just make floor 20 a floor consisting of every old riddle and puzzle she can think of, with a 24 hour wait between each attempted answer.

Sphinx riddle, Greek riddles, folktale riddles, etc. And the boss of the floor is actually just a door with a rubix cube attached.

  14. They dare steal from the evil god ? Not to mention they have no etiquette to fight the boss. I wonder what the demon lord would look like… I think of a loli with horns or a seductive woman.

  18. You know this reminds me of a legend of zelda comic I saw once. Where Link was wondering how a stone pushing puzzle (to make a triforce shape) could possibly prevent Ganon from stealing a treasure (triforce piece maybe?) Considering the fact there are three triangle shaped pushable pillars and a triforce grove on the floor. Cut to an earlier time in same dungion with Ganon on his knees in angush and crying because he could not solve it.

  19. Well, I was vastly entertained by the chapter and comments as usual, and was surprised to gather that someone had started to randomly translate Jashin Average as well… GASP!!! What blasphemy is this?!? … And also, why? >.> Chapters are coming along at a pretty rapid rate and they’re really, really good, so what exactly is the motivation here? But in the end, I don’t really care, because I’m just going to keep reading it here. Please think of it as being bitten by a dog and go on with your life… XD

  20. I’m impressed that they made it to the tenth floor despite not having proper supplies. But then the hero party was stalled by the riddle haha. He should have invested some skill points in a de-riddle skill lol.

Dungeon riddles and puzzles are often times bigger road blocks than simple monsters!

I can’t blame the hero too much though. The idea of putting puzzles in dungeons is a modern day expectation born from video games and role-playing! A “real” hero wouldn’t necessarily know how to solve puzzles.

Once again thanks for the chapter Sheeprabbit-sama! I don’t know what’s going with this other translator but you have my support by default lol. Hopefully no needless drama will result.

      1. So the puzzle is for them to place those slabs in the sockets they correspond to? Is so, how in the world can’t they figure something like that out? This worlds average IQ must be pretty low.

      2. Thanks~ I tried, so hopefully I’m not too far off with this, haha.

Also, I forgot to say this earlier, but thanks for the chapter Estelion!!

  24. when will you release next chapter i have been exited about the series and want to read more

    thanks for the awesome work

  25. Thanks for translating this, I just found it and it’s really damn funny I like the story being focused on the dungeon master not just some random hero. I wish there was more dungeon-esque stories, does anyone know some more apart from the “I reincarnated as a dungeon” one?

    1. Unfortunately I don’t know of any translated.

If you can read Japanese thoguh, I’m pretty sure there’s one about a guy being granted a wish by a goddess to become the most powerful demon king.

But she made a mistake, and he’s the weakest instead, so he has to build a dungeon to protect himself. Apparently it’s a harem comedy with hot springs.
